I In Hail 02:57
I In Hail, a release from CURVEBALL on the TOO EP was conceived in New York. In fact, more specifically, outside the Red Lobster on 7th Avenue. How could that be? A musician friend of mine, asked me recently how I managed to come up with my compositions. "Dunno...experimenting? I just can do it" was the vague reply. This song was different though. As I wandered up Broadway with my wife and friends towards the bright blur of Times Square (like proverbial moths to a flame), wisps of a reverberating drum pattern were funneling down W 41st St. We decided to follow the sounds rather than the lights. Finally, there was the source - a street drummer on the pavement outside the Red Lobster. He had some upturned large plastic buckets, which acted as the kick drum. He had a snare, various pots and pans and a clanking metal tray for percussion. I found out that he was known as 5 Dolla Tony. If anyone, stopped to watch him, he would urge: "5 dolla, 5 dolla." Go on, call to action: stick 5 dollars in my plastic bucket. Failure to produce 5 dollars would produce a shrug and "2 dolla, 2 dolla." Much to my wife's chagrin I stuck in $10. Tony did stop momentarily and fished out my $10 note. I didn't really get the impression that he was thanking me, but for the gathered crowd a suggestion that they might like to follow suit. The smile did tell a story though. It was money well spent. He seemed to be okay with my extended filming, but the thing was...that was a serious groove! People were dancing in front of him. On the opposite side of the avenue people were jigging to his beat. The beat was so memorable and I had captured it on an iPad. As soon as I got home, I had to write the score for Tony's drum pattern. Once the score was done, the bass line just arrived effortlessly. The kick pattern just seemed to produce it, well in my head anyway. Chords and keys came thereafter. So the piece had a working title - 5 Dolla. Thing was, I had a favourite song at the time, I Exhale by Underworld. Whilst we were in New York, Underworld were playing at Terminal 5, but it just wasn't possible to attend. As an aspiring composer and producer, I wondered what more I could do with this piece of music. So it's title changed to I In Hail and it transformed into an entity with the oft-used metaphor of coping with life's stormy challenges. Thanks Tony! about

CURVEBALL make music without words and agree with the sentiments of the esteemed composer Felix Mendelssohn:

"People usually complain that music is so ambiguous, that it leaves them in such doubt as to what they are supposed to think, whereas words can be understood by everyone. But to me it seems exactly the opposite."

The only clue to the composer's inspiration is in the title and possibly within the music itself.

PLEASE LISTEN and make CURVEBALL as unambiguously meaningful as you want it to be.

Caveat - it's probably not meaningful!
