CHRISTOPHER ANDREAS Jon Michaelson's (AKA Curveball) clever and very innovatively composed and produced music deserves a wide audience; and should by rights appear sometime soon on a film/TV soundtrack...somehow...somewhere.
Releasing recent output in the form of this series of EPs is a great idea: tidy, lovely - fun at times (hear 'See How They Run'!) - packages of music that tie together beautifully individually and as a collection.

The Tale of One Fingered Willie (a triumph over adversity) Well, here's something silly The tale of one fingered Willie Now Will died on the day he was 95 To this day, the greatest ever player of slide Will was born with his digits in tact So we have to state as a matter of fact An early warning in this story The loss of fingers is rather gory! We start with Will as a young lad He loved to work with his hands He always sat in the schoolhouse Bored to tears with English and Math The days in school always dragged for Will He couldn't wait to get to his pa's sawmill Timber was his inspiration and art His goal – to build his own guitar Now Will's pa had been saving long and hard And bought his son the longed for guitar To the day he died his pa remembered that smile It was the best day of Will's life So now he practised every available hour Widely reported as an amazing player It became known in the whole of the west That for fretwork he was simply the best It was like guitar gymnastics He could pull chords that were truly fantastic And when he played lead in his band People swore there was smoke coming off his hand It was about this time that Will's life began to unfurl And as ever it was all down to a girl You see he had been courting a lass called Lil Which conveniently rhymes with Will Now Lil didn't have music in her heart She had no appreciation of Will's art And one day she had finally had enough Storming off in a terrible huff It seems she was jealous of Will's skill Lil caused a massive scene down at the mill “I will never ever be your wife When that stupid guitar is your whole life!” Well, he was distraught and morose He loved his girl and thought they were close In absent mindedness and feeling so poor He started to push some timber through the saw Something now happened that was to change his life An awful mistake occurred, Will was mortified Just because she wouldn't be his wife Inexplicably, he lost fingers 1,2,4 and 5 Well, after all the blood, pain and gore Once again Will's pa came to the fore He was so positive and couldn't let his son hide “Now you must become the greatest player of slide.” So Will applied himself to a new technique And very soon hit a new peak He came to enjoy the best of days Performing to crowds who were amazed Occasionally there were the scoffers and cocksure “What can that dude do with only one finger?” But after the brilliance he put the one in the air As if in some sort of defiant gesture So the moral if you will – avoid girls called Lil And take care in the sawmill And even if disaster strikes Tune down to D and play slide

about

CURVEBALL make music without words and agree with the sentiments of the esteemed composer Felix Mendelssohn:

"People usually complain that music is so ambiguous, that it leaves them in such doubt as to what they are supposed to think, whereas words can be understood by everyone. But to me it seems exactly the opposite."

The only clue to the composer's inspiration is in the title and possibly within the music itself.

PLEASE LISTEN and make CURVEBALL as unambiguously meaningful as you want it to be.

Caveat - it's probably not meaningful!

WHAT MUSICAL GENRE IS CURVEBALL?

This is a challenge facing this composer every time he submits his music. What genre? What sub-genre? What? I don't know!

Well it is a studio project, so it seems expedient to call it electronic. There is no band or orchestra. Not at the moment, anyway.

Actually, CURVEBALL music exists because of a desire to write music for an orchestra - to create a score and have a large group of musicians play grand (hopefully) music.

The reality though: "I'm just a poor boy, from a poor family." So what chance a poor composer, with poor entrepreneurial skills ever affording the hire of an orchestra? Well...none really. So the only thing to do is interpret the composition in the only way possible at the moment...use a digital audio workstation.

So... WHAT MUSICAL GENRE IS CURVEBALL?

Well, as a composer, I don't care what genre it is. You can only produce something from within, that has accumulated from a multitude of influences.

So, if you have read up to this point - thanks! If you listen to CURVEBALL music - thanks! If you buy CURVEBALL music - many thanks! If you want some help in knowing what is the genre or definition of this music, then here are some of the notable influences in alphabetical order:

Abba America Aphex Twin Bach Barber John Barry Beatles Bjork Dave Brubeck David Bowie Can Cinematic Orchestra Elgar Genesis Goldfrapp Gorecki Handel PJ Harvey Kraftwerk Lamb LCD Soundsystem Leftfield Massive Attack Mogwai John Murphy Gary Numan Pearl Jam Pink Floyd Radiohead Rodrigo Rush Saint-Saens Stereolab TalkTalk Underworld Who Vaughan Williams Yes Neil Young... ...and so much more.

If you like any of those artists, there is a chance you will like CURVEBALL. Best, JM
